French bishops say Pope Benedict XVI plans to visit France in September

French bishops say Pope Benedict XVI will visit Paris and the Roman Catholic shrine of Lourdes in September.

The pontiff's trip on Sept. 12-15 marks 150 years since an illiterate peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous said she had visions of the Virgin Mary in the southwestern town of Lourdes.

Thousands of Roman Catholics have since said they were healed of illness after praying and bathing in a spring at the site of St. Bernadette's 1858 vision.

The French conference of bishops said Monday that the pope would lead an evening vespers' service at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris before traveling to Lourdes.
