Clerical Diocesan Appointments 2009 - Diocese of Meath

Bishop Michael Smith has announced the following clerical appointments to take effect on Sunday 11 October 2009

Retirements from Active Ministry

Monsignor Eamonn Marron is retiring as Vicar General.

Fr Andrew Farrell is retiring as Parish Priest of Trim.

Fr Edward Daly is retiring as Parish Priest of Kilcormac.

Fr Patrick Mackin is retiring as Parish Priest of Bohermeen.


New Appointments

Monsignor Dermot Farrell, PP Dunboyne becomes Vicar General.

Fr Seán Henry, PP Kingscourt is appointed PP Trim.

Fr Joseph Gallagher, Administrator Mullingar is appointed PP Kilcormac.

Fr Andrew Doyle, PP Kilskyre is appointed PP Bohermeen & VF Navan.

Fr John Brogan, PP Donore is appointed PP Kilskyre.

Fr Michael Meade, CC Mount Bolus is appointed PP Donore.

Fr Gerard MacCormack, Administrator Navan is appointed PP Kingscourt.

Fr Declan Hurley, CC Navan is appointed Administrator Navan.

Fr Padraig McMahon, CC Mullingar is appointed Administrator Mullingar.

Fr David Brennan, CC Bohermeen is appointed CC Moynalvey.

Fr Barry Condron, CC Castletown-Finea is appointed CC Dunshaughlin.

Fr Richard Matthews, PP Killucan is appointed VF Mullingar.

"I want to thank most sincerely our priests who are retiring from administrative duties while continuing to provide a pastoral support in the parishes.

"They have generously served the Lord and His people throughout their lives.

"I wish God’s blessing upon all who are taking up new responsibilities and, in this “Year for Priests”, I ask you to pray for them and work with them in proclaiming the Good News.”

Biographical Notes

Monsignor Eamonn Marron is a native of Navan and studied for the priesthood at the Pontifical Irish College, Rome where he was ordained in 1954 and later served as Rector from 1968 until his appointment as Parish Priest of Kinnegad in 1980. Monsignor Marron has served as Vicar General since 2001 and he retired as Parish Priest of Kinnegad in 2005.

Father Andrew Farrell is a native of Raharney and, having studied at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth he was ordained to the priesthood in 1957. He served for a time in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, USA and subsquently as Chaplain to Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan. Following an appointment to Saint Finian’s College, Mullingar in 1963, he returned to Navan in 1964 and was appointed Administrator of Saint Mary’s Parish in 1982. He served as Parish Priest of Kingscourt from 1987 until his appointment as Parish Priest of Trim in 1994.

Father Edward Daly is a native of Summerhill and he was ordained at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 1955. Having served on loan to the Diocese of Kildare for the first seven years of his ministry, he later worked as Curate in the parishes of Delvin, Kingscourt and Glasson as well as having been appointed Chaplain at Gormanston Army Camp. Next he ministered as Curate in Tullamore (1970) and Rosemount (1979) before he was nominated Parish Priest of Curraha in 1984. He has served as Parish Priest of Kilcormac since 1989.

Father Patrick Mackin is a native of Kingscourt parish and was ordained in 1954. As a newly ordained priest, he ministered in the Diocese of Saint Augustine, Florida until he returned in 1959 to serve for a few months in Castletown-Kilpatrick, after which he worked with the Emigrant Mission in London until 1961. His next appointments brought him to Tullamore, Milltown, Ballinabrackey and Mullingar where he was appointed Administrator in 1982. Later that same year, he became Parish Priest of Bohermeen. Father Mackin continues to assist the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, having retired as its Director in 2004.

Monsignor Dermot Farrell is a native of Castletown-Geoghegan. Ordained in 1980, he completed post-graduate studies at Maynooth before his appointment as Curate in Mullingar in 1981. In 1985 he went to Rome to complete his doctorate while also serving on the staff of the Pontifical Irish College. On his return to the Diocese in 1988, he was appointed Curate in Tullamore as well as a lecturer in Moral Theology at Maynooth. In 1990 he was appointed to the staff at Maynooth. In 1993 he was appointed Vice-President and in 1996 President, presiding over a major reconstruction and renovation of all its heritage buildings as well as reshaping its formation programme. He was appointed Parish Priest of Dunboyne in 2007.

Father Seán Henry is a native of Kilskyre and was ordained in 1981. His first appointment was as Curate in Navan and then as Chaplain at Saint Loman’s Hospital, Mullingar in 1984 when he became Diocesan Secretary in succession to Bishop Smith. He served as Curate at the Cathedral until his appointment as Administrator in 1997. He became Parish Priest of Kingscourt in 2004 and, earlier this year, he was appointed Diocesan Delegate for safeguarding children.

Father Joseph Gallagher succeeded Father Sean Henry as Cathedral Administrator in 2004. A native of Mucklagh, he was ordained from Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 1988 and, that same year was appointed Curate at the Cathedral. He has served as Director of the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes for the past five years.

Father Andrew Doyle has served as Parish Priest of Kilskyre since 1995. He is a native of Rochfortbridge and, following his ordination in 1970, he served as Chaplain at Saint Loman’s Hospital and taught at Saint Finian’s College until his appointment as Curate in Dunsany in 1990, after which he was transferred to Kilskyre.

Father John Brogan is a native of Oldcastle and was ordained from the Pontifical Irish College, Rome in 1974. He has served as Curate in the parishes of Clonmellon, Moynalty, Slane, Mucklagh and Kilcloon. He was appointed Parish Priest of Donore in 1999.

Father Michael Meade was ordained in his native parish of Rathkenny in 1987. He has served as Curate in the parishes of Castletown-Kilpatrick, Kingscourt, Ashbourne and, since 2003, Mount Bolus.

Father Gerard MacCormack is a native of Bohermeen, where he was ordained in 1985. His first appointment after ordination was as Curate in Ratoath, where he remained until he became Curate in Navan in 1994. He was appointed Administrator at Saint Mary’s Parish in 2001.

Father Declan Hurley was ordained in 1993 in his home parish of Bohermeen. Following the completion of post-graduate studies in Rome, he served as Curate at the Cathedral and as Diocesan Secretary. He recommenced his studies at the Institute Catholique, Paris in 2003 and was awarded a Doctorate in Theology last year, when he was also appointed Curate at Saint Mary’s Parish, Navan.

Father Padraig McMahon is a native of Kingscourt and was ordained in 1991. He has ministered as Curate in the parishes of Navan, Clara and Rosemount. In 2000 he was appointed Director of Primary School Catechetics, a position he retained until his appointment as Curate at the Cathedral last year.

Father David Brennan was ordained in 1994 in his home parish of Mullingar. Prior to his two year curacy in Bohermeen, he has served in the parishes of Dunsany, Raharney and Duleek.

Father Barry Condron is a native of Rahan and, following his ordination in 1995, he was appointed Curate in Moynalvey, where he remained until his transfer to Castletown-Finea in 2000. Last year he succeeded Father McMahon as Director of Primary School Catechetics.

Father Richard Matthews is a native of Kentstown, and was ordained in 1983. Having assisted in the parishes of Ardcath and Athboy, he joined the Meath Mission to Zambia in 1990 before becoming Curate in Dunboyne in 1993. He was appointed Parish Priest of Killucan in 2001.
