Massachussets pastor who suggested pope should resign over abuse crisis charged with drunken driving

A Roman Catholic pastor in Massachusetts who once suggested that the pope resign because of the church's handling of the clergy abuse crisis is facing a drunken driving charge after a three-car accident.

The Republican of Springfield reports (http://bit.ly/UAaKPB ) that the Rev. James Scahill of St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow is expected to appear in Palmer District Court within the next few days.

Scahill was charged with operating under the influence after a minor accident in East Longmeadow on Friday afternoon. No one was injured.

The 65-year-old pastor made headlines in 2010 when he said Pope Benedict XVI should resign for not being truthful about the abuse scandal and for not taking stronger action.

Scahill didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
